Dionne Warwick - Dionne Warwick Sings the Bacharach & Dav Amazon.co.uk "In the early 1960s",recalled , "there were hundreds of singers in New York. Dionne Warwick was different, though." Different she may have been, but it was a while before the legendary songwriting duo gave Warwick her first big international hit with "Anyone Who Had A Heart". Indeed, legend has it that Warwick's "Don't Make Me Over" was written after Hal David remembered her saying those words to him in annoyance at not being given the duo's best songs. This collection then, might be seen as a chance for Warwick to turn back time, as she wraps her vocal cords around a whole load of Bacharach and David material she didn't land first time around: "Alfie", "Trains And Boats And Planes", and "The Look Of Love" line up alongside material more usually associated with Warwick. And you can see why Bacharach and David both continue to cite her as the best vocalist they've ever worked with: all the qualities that draw folk to Bacharach and David canon--their reflective nature, their wit and their jazz-tinged intuition for rhythm--are just as attributable to Warwick herself. Sublime stuff.--Peter Paphides
